Handing over science books to Ujiji municipal Education Officer
Yalagwila Gwimo for use by Gungu Secondary School in Kigoma, Airtel’s
Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Hawa Bayumi noted that Tanzania
is in great need of professional manpower.
“Each and every individual student must use whatever opportunity
they have to widen their knowledge to bridge this gap,” she said.
“We have decided to join forces with the government by supporting
secondary schools in the country with teaching aids,” she went on to
say.
“We hope the assistance will inspire students to improve their performance,” she added.
Bayumi said at the moment, the number of students majoring in science subjects is very low.
“This is the reason of we decided to support schools with science
books in order to increase number of students taking science subjects,”
she added.
She said Airtel is working not only to improve “students’ learning environment but also that of their teachers.
“We are also donating books to assist teachers effectively transfer
knowledge to their students,” Hawa said. Gungu Secondary school
Headmaster Alberto Dobeye expressed gratitude for the support.
“The books we have received today will improve students’ and
teachers’ access to learning material that will help boost their
academic performances,” he said.
Commenting on the aid, Ujiji Municipal Education officer Yalagwila
Gwimo appealed to the students to make effective use of the received
aid.
“The donation is timely and I encourage good use of the materials
so they may last long and serve more students and teachers,| he said.
“I also encourage more students to enroll for science subjects,” he added.
Expressing their gratitude on behalf of other students, Kassim
Abdallah and Rosemary Christopher acknowledged that the book donation
will encourage students to study harder.
Airtel’s commitment to corporate social responsibility focuses
mainly in the health and education sectors. Since the establishment of
Airtel Shule yetu project, more than 1000 secondary schools have
benefited from various donations ranging from books and desks to
construction of classrooms among other things.
